May

May 1, 2014
It was a cool spring but thing have warmer the last few weeks. Cool spell for the last couple days has made for a great topwater bite for the bass. Big shaky head worms have been working great too. The cloud cover helps the shallow bass feel more comfortable and in the right mood to eat. Several bass have been spawning in the 1-4ft range, with several more bass to move up and spawn in the near future. Same thing with the crappie except for the fact that they are a little ahead of the bass. I would guess that they could be half way done with their spawning ritual. Several crappie have backed off to a little deeper water in the 5-15ft range waiting for this Friday to hit the banks again. Blue catfish have been biting pretty good outside of areas where there are several crappie being cleaned. Those big blues eat the crappie carcasses. So if you know of some resorts where several crappie have been caught and cleaned then rig up a big rod and throw a hunk of shad or bluegill meat out there on the bottom.
The best bite right now and for the next few weeks will be bass. Look to the shallows and around docks to produce the best. The bass fry will be out soon and that also will make fishing pretty easy to catch some big fat bass for the average angler to have fun with. Catch and release for bass is imperative this time of the year.
Good Luck
Jack
